This is an original dichromie lithograph these lithographs were produced and published by de Brunoff in Paris in 1899 -1928 in a lavish bound collection of 52 major prints representing the costume and set designs by H.J. Stowitts for the Fay Yen Fah opera. It took Stowitts three years to research and execute the original paintings from which the lithographs were produced. The premier exhibition of this collection of paintings was held at the Jean Charpenier Galleries in Paris in June, 1927. The opening was attended by such diverse notables of the Jazz Age as Man Ray, Josephine Baker, Baron and Baronne Maurice de Rothschild, Mrs. William Randolph Hearst, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Murphy, Mme. Ida Rubenstein, Mr. and Mrs. Cole Porter, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, to name but a few. This society-studded crowd was a clear affirmation of the esteem Stowitts enjoyed. The printing process used to produce these works on paper was conceived by Man Ray who gave Stowitts permission to use the process. It was an extremely difficult process sometimes using as many as seven separations, something unheard of at the time. This lithograph is in excellent condition. It has never been framed and is not faded in any way. The image measures approximately, 8.75x10.75 inches, and is mounted on 13x16 heavy stock.
