We are pleased to offer this beautiful complete folio sized work by Harriet Stewart Miner entitled Orchids The Royal Family Of Plants With Illustrations From Nature.

This is the Boston edition of the first and only edition of a beautiful color-plate book on orchids, "the elite of the floral kingdom", by the American botanist Harriet Stewart Miner. This is apparently the first color plate orchid book executed by an American. The plates include Dendrobium, Masedvallia, Cattleya, Laelia, Phalaenopsis, Oncidium, Calanthe, Odontoglossum, Lycaste, Cymbidiums, Vanda, etc.

"This is the ranking work on the subject and very striking" (Bennett). While all plates are signed "H.S.M.", Miner mentions in the introduction that "The designs of the artists have been engraved on stone and reproduced in colors by the Hatch Lithographic Company of New York", indicating that there was more than one artist. The introduction is followed by an "Outline of the orchid flora" and a "hymn to the flowers" by Horace Smith. The main work consists of the 24 lithographic plates, accompanied by letterpress descriptions and some more poetry. Some minor wear along the extremities of the binding, but otherwise in very good condition.
