The Insect, Arachnid and Crustaceans section of the 'Unterhaltungen aus der Naturgeschichte'. The complete work consists of 10 volumes. The present volumes 1-3 with an index to the vols. 1-3. Treated are all of the Insect classes and many of the other classes of Arachnids and Crustaceans. Wilhelm (1758-1811) was a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist in Augsburg , where the first edition was published. This popular and beautifully illustrated work is a fine example of the enlightened encyclopedic science of the period, with an emphasis on education. Nissen BBI, 2152; Stafleu & Cowan 17.638.
Octavo (app. size in inches: 7.25 x 4.75). Richly gilt and blind stamped half-leather with marbled boards.
3 engraved titles, XLVIII, 376, 424, 418 pp, 12 leaves (index on all 3 vols.), one engraved fold-out table (table of instruction, showing the general anatomical parts of insects. With 150 hand colored plates depicting a large variety of insects, such as butterflies, flies, wasps, but also spiders, cancers and crabs. Fine binding and in generally fine condition, though vol. 2 has shows water staining to first leaves and frontispiece (not affecting any of the plates). Plates bright and clean. No text offsetting, or any wear to the coloring or plates in general.
