Volumes One through 7, all finely bound in red hardcovers with gold embossed floral foliate borders and panels and gold tipped pages.
These beautiful and scarce original editions date from 1834-1840. There are over 325 full page hand colored illustrations (25 of them are two page fold-outs!), and that is not including the hundreds of woodcut illustrations.
They are not only valuable for their age and highly sought after intricately detailed hand coloured plates, but they are also a wealth of still relevant information on flowers and the love and art of gardening. There are also many illustrations and explanations of garden layouts, structures, implements, planning and the identification and eradication of pests.
As well as numerous wood-cut and hand coloured illustrations of each flower, there is specific technical information about the history and cultivation of each species. Although there is very precise scientific information included, the author states in the introduction that he was very careful to use plain english and non-scientific terms to make the information easy to understand and retain for all.
