Stencil coloring process (source Jacomet Process site):

THE STENCIL COLORING TECHNIQUE The stencil is made from a sheet of zinc one tenth of a millimeter thick. Openings previously traced according to the design and color to be reproduced are cut in a sheet of zinc, using a very sharp and tapered steel blade. The stencil is then applied to the printed proof in engraving, lithography or collotype. We will have to trace and cut as many stencils as necessary to obtain a faithful reproduction (from fifteen to forty stencils on average, sometimes up to sixty stencils for certain more delicate works). It will be necessary, during the tracing, to determine the range of values in each color starting with the lightest and to define precisely the shape and the location of the passages by foreseeing the effects of the superimpositions. For each stencil, the color will be prepared, taking care to maintain its tone and intensity throughout the print. This colour, watercolour, gouache, Indian ink or wash will be applied using a special round brush made of hog bristle. For some stencils, it is also expected that the color will be softened, after it has been applied, blended and blended with a small softener brush.
