About the work: The Danse Macabre (from the French language), also called the Dance of Death, is an artistic genre of allegory of the Late Middle Ages on the universality of death: no matter one's station in life, the danse macabre unites all. Many renowned artists, including Hans Holbein, had been creating their own versions of this notorious subject since the 14th century. Jacque-Antony Chovin copied and embellished plates of Matthew Merian's 1649 edition.
