The Coconut palm, original color lithograph from approx. 1880 The reverse side of the sheet is not printed. Size of the image: 10.5 x 15 cm.

The coconut palm or coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) is a tropical palm family on which the coconut grows. Cocos nucifera is the only species in the genus. There are different types. Coconut palms have been grown for at least 3000 years. Today the coconut palm provides 8 percent of the world's vegetable oil needs and is also used in many other ways.

The word coconut goes back through Spanish and Portuguese coco to late Latin coccus and ultimately to ancient Greek κόκκος kókkos, which means “core” or “berry”. It has the same origins as Kokke.

The drawing is made with a fatty substance on a specially prepared (ground, grained and degreased) fine-grained limestone. In order to stabilize the greasy drawing on the stone and to make the non-printing areas insensitive to the color to be applied, the stone surface is wiped over with talc and an etching liquid is applied. After it has been washed off the stone again and this has dried, a film-like coating is made with gum arabic. The wet rubber is repelled by the greasy drawing and only sticks to the unmarked areas. Once the stone has dried, the drawing is washed out with turpentine until it can only be seen as a grease base. This greasy base must be strengthened by rubbing it with tincture of asphalt and then drying it. A roller transfers the printing ink onto the moistened stone. The grease base repels the water and absorbs the color, which, because it is fatty, is repelled by the damp stone areas. The stone is put into a rubbing press - which is used for printing. Instead of a stone, metal plates can also be used. After the overlay has been printed, the stone is sanded down (often 2 stones rubbed on top of each other) and can be prepared for a new work.
